Lahore: The Punjab government has closed the PKR 137 billion Lahore Restoration Project Management Unit (PMU), transferring the responsibility for 770 development schemes to the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) and the Metropolitan Corporation Lahore (MCL).
According to the details, these concerning departments will now manage key infrastructure upgrades throughout Lahore. An allocation of PKR 35 billion has been approved for these projects, which focus on revamping and renovating the city’s roads, upgrading the sewage system, improving water supply lines, installing new tube wells, and enhancing local infrastructure. During a recent briefing to Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif by WASA and MCL, officials outlined critical issues such as broken roads, malfunctioning streetlights, and outdated water and sewage systems.
The provincial government has approved development projects totaling PKR 137 billion, with PKR 59 billion allocated to the MCL and PKR 78 billion to WASA. The water agency will extend its services beyond its usual jurisdiction to address existing waterlogging issues, particularly during the rainy season. These projects are part of the broader 770 development schemes aimed at modernising Lahore’s infrastructure.
Initially, the Punjab government planned to manage these projects through the PMU, but following a review, the responsibility was transferred to WASA and MCL. An official announcement detailing their roles in the development work is expected soon.
Both agencies will oversee their respective projects and ensure their proper execution. To promote transparency and accountability, a third-party audit will be conducted during the implementation process. This shift in management is intended to accelerate Lahore’s infrastructure development and assist in betterment and development of City.
