Islamabad held a high-level meeting at the CDA headquarters to tackle the smog situation. Chief Commissioner and CDA Chairman Muhammad Ali Randhawa led the meeting. Senior officials from Pak-EPA, the Ministry of Climate Change, police, and CDA’s Environment Wing attended.
Current Smog and Air Quality Index Update
Recently, on November 13, 2024, Islamabad’s Air Quality was 192, indicating health concerns. This was calculated using PM2.5, NO2, and CO levels. Pak-EPA confirmed that the situation is under control but promised regular AQI updates.
Key Anti-Smog Measures
- Vehicle Emissions: Mandatory vehicle fitness checks, strict action against heavy vehicles emitting smoke, and legal action against violators.
- Construction Sites: Dust control through water sprinkling.
- Hotspot Monitoring: Enhanced surveillance using Safe City cameras for emissions and border areas.
- Brick Kilns: Shutdown of non-zigzag technology brick kilns.
- Waste Burning: Inspections to prevent waste burning at dumping sites. No crop residue burning found in Islamabad.
Awareness and Health Campaigns
A public campaign will be launched with the Ministry of Information, police FM stations, and others. Hospitals will hold a symposium and awareness walk, distribute posters, and issue health advisories about smog prevention.
Collaboration
The meeting stressed the importance of coordination among all agencies to improve air quality and protect public health. Measures aim for international standards, ensuring transparency and efficiency.
