Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, Punjab showed concern in reducing pollution of punjab province. Senior Provincial Minister Maryam Aurangzeb led a review meeting that focused on four key areas: air quality, education, population, and health.
A high-level delegation from the Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) attended the meeting to discuss ongoing efforts to combat smog in Lahore. They reviewed strategies, including the use of Safe City cameras to identify and fine smoke-emitting motorcycles. It was highlighted that smog levels rose in May due to the burning of crop residue, and the goal is to lower the Air Quality Index (AQI) from 100 PM to 70 PM by 2028.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has directed the introduction of electric bikes, vehicles, and buses to cope with environmental pollution. Minister Maryam Aurangzeb focussed on the importance of public awareness and education in controlling pollution, highlighting the need for collective efforts to protect the environment. The government will perform a crackdown on vehicles violating environmental laws.
The meeting considered adopting pollution control models from Bangladesh and China to address motorcycle emissions. The ongoing tree plantation campaign led by the Chief Minister is expected to play a crucial role in reducing environmental pollution. Operations against encroachments continue under the Chief Minister’s directives, with heavy fines imposed for environmental law violations.
A new app will be launched soon to improve coordination among departments. Regarding education, the Senior Provincial Minister expressed concern over the lack of a comprehensive strategy in the governance system, making it challenging to achieve significant improvements.
A new middle and matric tech program will be launched in 500 schools across Punjab, along with an awareness campaign to improve the education system. The school meal program is set to begin in the first week of September, focusing on increasing enrollment and retention in schools. Quality classrooms are being constructed at a fraction of the usual cost.
