PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provincial government has launched an ambitious plan to install solar power in all public sector buildings in the province, including hospitals, schools, colleges, universities, police stations, prisons and other government institutions. The initiative is aimed at ensuring uninterrupted power supply while reducing the energy costs of the provincial government. A committee meeting chaired by Chief Minister Ali Amin Khan Gandapur was held to review the progress of the solarisation project, which is part of the state government’s efforts to transition to renewable energy sources. The committee was briefed about the energy demand of public sector buildings and data collection is currently underway. Around 13,000 units have been assessed so far, with a total capacity of 73 MW of solar power systems required. Once fully implemented, the project is expected to generate 92 million units of solar energy annually.
The estimated cost of the solarisation scheme is Rs 10 billion, which is expected to save the state government around Rs 2 billion annually on electricity bills. Solarization covers major units in public sector, such as educational facilities, state -owned offices, and public service facilities, and provide reliable electricity in daily work.
During the meeting, Prime Minister Gandapur asked the committee to accelerate the project and meet all requirements next week. He stressed the importance of completing the project as soon as possible so that people can start reaping the benefits of solar energy.
Apart from solar power for public buildings, the KP government also plans to launch a similar initiative for mosques and madrasas in the province. The plan includes converting 7,000 mosques and 3,000 madrasas to solar energy and expanding the scope of the province’s renewable energy efforts.
The Rs 10 billion project marks a significant milestone in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s sustainable development and energy efficiency efforts in line with the provincial government’s goal of reducing dependency on traditional energy sources and promoting green energy solutions.
