Pakistan Expressed Support for the People of Bangladesh and Hope for Stability

Pakistan has expressed support for Bangladesh as the country deals with political chaos and havoc after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s resignation.

In a press release, Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated, “The Government and people of Pakistan stand in solidarity with the people of Bangladesh, sincerely hoping for a peaceful condition in the country again.”

“We are confident that the resilient spirit and unity of the Bangladeshi people will lead them towards a harmonious future,” the statement added.

Relations between Pakistan and Bangladesh have been overextended and stretched  for many years, especially during Sheikh Hasina’s tenure. The South Asian Association for Regional collaboration (SAARC) saw a decline in relations and a negative impact on regional collaboration.

In 2016, Bangladesh, along with India, boycotted the SAARC summit, preventing the meeting from happening since then. With the recent political changes in Bangladesh, there is big hope that diplomatic relations may improve.

Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammad Yunus has been appointed as the chief adviser of Bangladesh’s interim government after a violent student-led uprising that ousted Hasina. The protests, sparked by dissatisfaction over public sector job quotas, caused significant unrest, leading to approximately 300 deaths and thousands of injuries.
