On January 11, 2024, the CEO of Tesla, Mr.Elon Musk responded to questions regarding his plans for Mars by revealing some details on cryptocurrencies’ logical use in Martian colonies.
During a discussion named as “Ark 21Shares Bitcoin ETF (ARKB) Approved” on X (formerly Twitter), Elon Musk discussed his broader vision of making humans a multi-planet species. He also highlighted the potential challenges we might face in achieving this goal. According to Crypto news, Musk presented an idea of using cryptocurrencies for transactions on Mars during this discussion.
While explaining the financial aspects of space missions, a participant asked Musk how much amount he would be willing to invest on Mars when everything goes in the right direction. In reply, Musk underscored the possibility to use digital assets on Martian soil. However, he raised a crucial point regarding the impracticality of using Bitcoin initially because of extended reconciliation process, which is time-consuming, especially over long distances.
Musk expressed, “It would make sense to use some kind of cryptocurrency on Mars; you couldn’t use Bitcoin because the reconciliation is too long.” This remark highlights the difficulties associated with the time-consuming process of Bitcoin transactions. Infact, interplanetary transactions are complex and complicated process to manage.
Bitcoin currently takes up to one hour for secure transactions. Its blockchain assembles them into 10-minute blocks, requiring confirmation of six blocks before the transaction is finalized.
The CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, while initially emphasizing the limitations of Bitcoin, later tempered his critique by providing context. He mentioned that Mars is around twelve light minutes away from the sun, while Earth is about eight. He stated that “Mars can be like twenty light minutes away. So, it is not easy, there would have to be a localized thing on Mars.”While this difference looms as a potential barrier, Musk suggested possible ways to overcome these hurdles.
