Karachi: The government will review the PKR 211.399 billion Cholistan Canal and Systems Phase-I project during today’s Central Development Working Party (CDWP) meeting, as reported on September 20.
The project has faced objections from the Sindh government, which raised concerns about its impact on water availability. Sindh officials insist that water supplies must be increased before construction begins, fearing that without more water, the canal could worsen existing shortages.
Punjab, on the other hand, claims that the Cholistan Canal will use floodwater for four months of the year, with additional water sourced within Punjab for the rest of the year. However, Sindh remains reluctant to accept this proposal without assurances of increased water availability.
This disagreement between the provinces underscores the ongoing challenges of water management and resource allocation in Pakistan. As the CDWP reviews the project, the outcome will be watched closely, as it could influence future water-related projects and interprovincial cooperation.
