PM Pakistan Emphasizes FBR Renovation, Focusing on Technology

Islamabad: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed officials to fast-track reforms within the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), stressing the integration of modern technology in tax and revenue collection processes to improve productivity and efficiency and enhance taxpayer satisfaction. In a high-level meeting held on Thursday, the prime minister underscored the need to foster a “cordial and friendly” environment within the FBR to better serve taxpayers, promoting a streamlined, technology-driven approach for smoother operations.

PM Shehbaz also instructed FBR officials to strategize the restructuring of Pakistan Revenue Automation Limited (PRAL) to support these modernization efforts. Highlighting the importance of enhanced measures, he called for a strengthened system to combat smuggling and directed the upskilling of FBR officers to optimize performance within this updated framework.

As part of these reforms, the FBR has introduced a key update to its Active Taxpayer List (ATL). Going forward, the ATL will be updated daily instead of weekly, ensuring timely inclusion of taxpayers who meet filing deadlines. According to the FBR, this change, supported by recent amendments to the Income Tax Rules, 2002, aims to enhance transparency and real-time compliance tracking. The new ATL approach will benefit taxpayers, including those who file after deadlines but pay the prescribed surcharge, as their active status will now be reflected immediately
