Elon Musk tweeted Neuralink has Installed Brain Implant in First Human Patient

Elon Musk shared a post on X(formerly Twitter), “The first human received a brain implant from Neuralink yesterday and is recovering well.” He further expressed optimism by stating, “Initial results show promising neuron spike detection.”

Neuralink is a neurotechnology company that develops implantable brain-computer interfaces (BCIs). Founded by Elon Musk in 2016, the company aims to create a device that can be implanted in the human brain to allow for direct communication between the brain and computers. According to data provided by Pitchbook, Neuralink, headquartered in California, had over 400 employees last year and had successfully raised a minimum of $363 million. Neuralink’s technology has the potential to revolutionize the way we interact with our computers and our surrounding world.

In San Francisco. Elon Musk announced on Tuesday that Neuralink, his neurotechnology startup, has successfully implanted a brain device in its inaugural human patient, showcasing encouraging initial outcomes.

Neuralink’s objective is to establish direct communication links between the brain and computers, with the ultimate aim of augmenting human capabilities, treating neurological disorders such as ALS and Parkinson’s disease.

While Musk envisions achieving collaboration with artificial intelligence as Neuralink’s ultimate goal. For initial stage, their goal is to enable paralyzed individuals to control a cursor or keyboard using their brains. Neuralink’s study focuses on individuals with quadriplegia, which is paralysis in all four limbs, due to spinal cord injuries or ALS. This disease is also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease. The participants need to be at least 22 years old.is specifically targeting individuals with quadriplegia, paralysis in all four limbs, resulting from cervical spinal cord injury or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), with participants being at least 22 years old. The expected timeline for completing the study is six years.

Neuralink plans to utilize a surgical robot developed by the company to place the brain implant in a region of the brain responsible for movement intention. The coin-sized device is designed to wirelessly record and transmit brain signals to an app, which decodes these signals.

Having secured approval from US regulators last year to conduct tests involving brain implants in people, Neuralink utilizes a device named the “Link” for its technology. This implant, roughly the size of five stacked coins, is inserted into the human brain through an invasive surgical procedure.

Currently, the only information we have about the Neuralink surgery is from a single tweet by Musk. Even though it may not be a giant leap toward merging humans with AI, it would be an important step forward for this big goal of organization.
